In February 2025, AIResumeBuilder.com surveyed 1,000 recent job seekers to assess the role of ChatGPT in the job application process. The findings revealed that AI-assisted applicants were more likely to secure interviews, job offers, and higher salaries.
Key findings:
46% of job applicants used ChatGPT to write application materials, and 37% utilized it to help with interviews.
Candidates who used ChatGPT were more likely to get interviews and offers.
Applicants who used ChatGPT secured higher salaries; 3 in 10 received six-figure offers.
1 in 3 Recent Job Seekers Used ChatGPT To Write Their Resume
Nearly half (46%) of job applicants used ChatGPT to write their application materials. Among those who used it, 78% relied on it for their resume, 66% for their cover letter, 41% for written questions, and 38% for writing samples.
Regarding editing, 23% said they made many changes to the materials, while 57% made some edits to the AI-generated content. On the other hand, 18% only made minor changes, and 2% used the text as-is without any edits.
Overall, 84% of users rated the quality of ChatGPT-generated materials as high or very high, 16% considered them to be of medium quality, and less than 1% found them low quality.
“ChatGPT can help create resumes, cover letters, and other job materials by identifying key skills needed for a role,” says Soozy Miller, head of career advising at AI Resume Builder. “For instance, if a marketing manager position lists ‘social media posting’ as a required skill, ChatGPT might add ‘social media posting’ to your skills section.”
“Matching your resume’s keywords closely to the job posting increases its visibility to hiring software and teams. However, relying solely on AI without editing can make your application seem impersonal. Some applicant tracking systems even reject resumes that match job descriptions by more than 90%, signaling excessive AI use, which recruiters can quickly spot.”
82% of ChatGPT Users Got Interviews
Seven in 10 job seekers got interviews during their most recent job search. However, people who used ChatGPT to write their application materials were more likely to secure interviews (82% compared to 58%).
Among those who engaged in interviews, 37% used ChatGPT to assist with the interview process. ChatGPT was leveraged to prepare answers (70%), for assistance during the interview (60%), and for company research (55%).
”One way to use ChatGPT to prepare for an interview is to upload the job posting and request interview questions,” says Miller. “ChatGPT suggests some very logical, appropriate, and helpful questions. However, in doing this, you’re trying to predict what the interviewer will ask, and predicting human behavior is not often successful. Each interviewer’s perspective is different, and their questions will flow with the conversation. Use ChatGPT as an idea generator, but don’t create a script that you plan to read in response to questions. You will sound unnatural.”
“Companies see where AI is helpful to candidates, but they also witness it being abused (e.g. the aforementioned 90% match issue and reading a script). Job seekers can use AI as one of the tools in their toolbox, but it’s important to review the content and personalize it.”
Applicants Who Used ChatGPT Were 3x More Likely To Get an Offer Over $100k
Job seekers who relied on ChatGPT for help with either written materials or interview preparation had a better chance of receiving and securing more offers than those who did not.
Among those who used ChatGPT for both their application materials and interview prep, 85% received job offers, compared to only 60% of those who did not use ChatGPT at all.
ChatGPT users also secured more interviews overall. Additionally, 30% of applicants who utilized ChatGPT for interviews and written materials received job offers exceeding $100,000, while only 7% of those who did not use ChatGPT reached the same salary level.
“ChatGPT is helping candidates be successful in their job search by identifying key skills and experience needed for a role. Many job seekers randomly send out a lot of resumes, hoping a company will notice. Using ChatGPT to qualify the skills and experience required for a job helps job seekers save time. Because ChatGPT helps job seekers to focus their job search and prepare for interviews, they are found by the search software sooner, they are more attractive to the hiring team, they are more likely to land offers, and those offers come with higher salaries,” says Miller.
Methodology
This survey launched in February 2025 and was commissioned by AIResumeBuilder.com and conducted online by the polling platform Pollfish. Overall, 1,000 U.S. residents completed the full survey. Appropriate respondents were found via demographic criteria and screening questions. Respondents had to answer that they had engaged in a job search within the past year.
